The first ten minutes
If sewage is coming back into the building, the order of operations is short and it does not involve calling anyone first.
- Stop all water use. Every fixture, everyone in the building. This is the whole ballgame.
- Keep people and pets clear of anything that has surfaced, indoors or out.
- Do not open the tank. Not to look, not to help, not for any reason.
- Kill power to any affected area if water is anywhere near outlets or equipment.
- Photograph what you can see safely — it helps whoever comes out, and it helps later if there is an insurance conversation.
Then send the details through, and say plainly that it is active.
The tank is the part that kills people
This deserves its own section because it is consistently underestimated, and because the instinct in an emergency is to go and look.
Septic tank atmospheres are oxygen-deficient and contain hydrogen sulfide and methane. Hydrogen sulfide in particular deadens the sense of smell at exactly the concentrations that become dangerous, so the warning sign disappears right when it matters. A person who leans into a tank can lose consciousness in seconds — quickly enough that they cannot get themselves out.
The pattern that follows is the reason these incidents are so often multiple-fatality: someone sees a family member collapse and climbs in after them, into the same atmosphere, with the same result. Tank entry rescues are performed with breathing apparatus and a retrieval line, by people trained and equipped for confined-space entry. There is no version of it that is safe to improvise.
Aged lids are a separate hazard. Concrete degrades in the corrosive environment above the liquid, and a lid can look sound and still fail under a footstep. If a lid is cracked, sunken, or missing, cover it with something substantial, keep children and pets well away, and say so in your request.
Storms, and what they do to a county at once
The failure mode that produces most of the genuine emergencies here is not mechanical. It is water.
A drain field disperses effluent into unsaturated soil. When a prolonged wet spell or a tropical system saturates the ground, that capacity disappears — not because anything broke, but because the soil is already full. Systems that were coping start surfacing, and they do it across the whole county within a few days of each other.
That has two practical consequences worth knowing in advance:
- It is not just your system. The clustering is the point. Everyone with a marginal field is having the same week.
- Availability is not normal. Every septic contractor in the area is fielding the same calls. This is precisely why we do not publish a response-time promise — during the events when it would matter most, nobody can honour one.
Pitt County has a long memory for this. The Tar River flooding that followed Hurricane Floyd in 1999 is still the benchmark, with Matthew in 2016 and Florence in 2018 as more recent reminders.
After the water goes down
Two things people get wrong in the days after a flood:
Do not rush to pump the tank while the ground is still saturated. An empty tank sitting in waterlogged soil can float or shift, breaking the inlet and outlet connections and turning a wet week into a repair bill. Wait for the ground to drain.
Do not assume it survived. A system that has been submerged should be checked before it is trusted, particularly the pump, controls, and any electrical components. Silt entering the tank or the distribution box during a flood is common and does not clear itself.
