What a drain field actually does
The tank is the easy part. It separates solids from liquid and holds them, and everything about it is mechanical and visible. The drain field is where the treatment happens, and it works on soil rather than hardware.
Effluent leaves the tank and is distributed into trenches. From there it moves down through unsaturated soil, where the biological work of treatment happens before the water reaches groundwater. Every part of that depends on the soil below the trench being unsaturated. Fill that space with water and the field cannot function, no matter how sound the pipework is.
This is why drain field problems so often look like they came out of nowhere. Nothing broke. The ground changed.
Why this matters more here than in most places
North Carolina evaluates soil before permitting a system, and the depth to the seasonal high water table is one of the things that evaluation is looking for. On the coastal plain that depth is frequently shallow. Poorly drained soil series are common across Pitt County, and in the wettest months the water table can sit close enough to the surface to eat into the unsaturated depth a conventional trench needs.
That produces a very specific and very common local pattern: a system that is completely fine through a dry summer, and starts backing up or ponding in late winter. Homeowners reasonably assume something failed over the winter. Usually nothing did — the field was always marginal for the site, and the wet season exposes it every year, a bit earlier each time as the soil interface slowly loads up.
It also means the honest answer to “how long will this last” is often “it depends on how wet the next few winters are”, which is unsatisfying but true.
The mistakes that turn a repair into a replacement
Most fields are not killed by one dramatic event. They are killed by an accumulation of ordinary decisions.
- Skipping pump-outs. Once solids carry over into the trenches they clog the soil interface, and that damage does not reverse. This is the single most common avoidable cause.
- Parking on the field. Compaction closes pore space permanently. A gravel pad, a trailer left over the winter, or a delivery truck turning around is enough.
- Adding fixtures or occupants without checking the permitted flow. A system approved for three bedrooms is not approved for five. The field is sized to a number.
- Directing roof or surface water onto it. A field already handling household flow does not need the gutters as well. Downspouts and grading should shed away from it.
- Planting trees near it. Roots go where the water is, and the trenches are where the water is.
Replacement, when it comes to that
A replacement field is not simply a new set of trenches in the same hole. It requires a soil evaluation and a permit through county environmental health, and it requires somewhere to put it — which is why the permit records usually designate a repair area, a reserved portion of the lot kept clear for exactly this. If that area has since been built on, paved, or planted, the replacement gets considerably more complicated and occasionally impossible without a different system type altogether.
