If it backs up again quickly, effluent is not leaving the tank, and the drain field or the line to it is where the money will go. Any diagnosis offered without that step is a guess.
Can a failing septic system be repaired, or does it always need replacing?
Plenty of failures are genuine repairs — baffles, pumps, float switches, distribution boxes, crushed lines, and root intrusion are all fixable without touching the drain field. A drain field that has genuinely failed is a different matter and usually means replacement. The point of a proper diagnosis is to find out which category you are in before committing to the expensive one.
Why does my system only back up in winter and spring?
That pattern points at the water table rather than the system. A drain field works by dispersing effluent into unsaturated soil, so when the seasonal high water table rises into the trench zone there is nowhere for the water to go.
